Weed

Daily writing prompt
What’s something you do completely differently from how you were raised?

I smoke weed most nights to cope with the trauma that I’m working on processing with a EMDR therapist at this time. My parents were teens in the Nixon era, when anti-weed propaganda was prominent. I don’t blame them for criticizing my weed habits when I was still in high school – my brain was still developing, and so smoking too much weed may have caused real harm – but I was salty about the fact that they simply harshly criticized this potentially self-destructive habit, and did not seek out alternative ways in which I could cope with my trauma.

I was also salty about the fact that they continued to criticize my weed smoking habits well into my adulthood. “I can tell you’re high,” a parent said disapprovingly when they called me one Friday night as recently as this year. They struggle to undo ideas that were pounded into their developing brains, though, and so I forgive them.
