When I was a kid, my dad owned a small airplane – a Piper 28 Cherokee. It sat four people total, including the pilot, who was my dad. When I was old enough, I was allowed to sit in the copilot’s seat. I even took hold of the yoke and flew the plane across the sky for a minute. In these moments, I felt so tall, like I could do anything.
My siblings and I spent glorious Saturday afternoons climbing up on the wing and into the tiny space. We buckled our seatbelts, and taxied out onto the runway. I always looked forward to the moment we took off by the shift in texture I felt beneath me. In one instant, the rough concrete runway became smooth air. As the plane’s nose guided us upwards, blue sky and white clouds soon filled up our entire view as we looked straight out the windows. As we craned our necks to peer down, or when my dad made a big turn, we could see acres of farm fields and neighborhoods dotting the ground miles below us.
I will never forget the feeling of sitting in the cockpit and guiding the plane through the wide open sky. I felt so free. If you could relive a day or moment from your past, what would it be? Comment to let me know!
