If I could master any skill right away, it would be the skill of learning new languages. Being born in America did not expose me to too many different languages at the critical age for language acquisition, but my dad did teach us a few different phrases in French and Latin. He taught us Spanish, too, which was augmented by my years of school.

You could retain more as a child. By the age of 10, it’s more difficult to remember things after that. There is so much in elementary school and I’m a big supporter of keeping the arts in school. It would have been nice if I had learned Italian in elementary school, but I’m not sure how they would have asked each child what language do you want that may have been difficult. They do learn languages here in intermediate school or junior high then in high school
