Practicing gratitude for your abilities can shift focus away from self-doubt and toward appreciation. Focusing on gratitude can improve one’s mental health in a big way. A lot of my self-doubt stems from core beliefs I was taught when I was a child. As a child, I was taught that my intelligence was a measure of my worth. In 2011, sustaining a severe traumatic brain injury reduced my intelligence by a significant amount and affected my self-worth in a big way.
As a younger child, I was very smart. I placed into the 99th percentile of children my age on standardized tests, the IOWA test of basic skills, in grade school. This means I scored better on this test than 99 percent of all American children my age. This was no doubt due to my immense privilege, and equating my intelligence to my worth was not a problem for me at this time.
However, my perception of my own worth became bad for my mental health after my injury. Years of therapy have assisted me in making significant progress in my mental health.
One example of me practicing gratitude is by practicing gratitude by writing down three things I am grateful for every morning. This is rewiring my brain in a positive way. What do you think is the best way to build self-confidence? Comment to let me know!
