What’s the most profound piece of advice you’ve been given? Did you take it?

Once, at my uncle’s Superbowl party, I was in the basement talking to the only black guy at the party for hours. The last thing he said to me was, “You’re cool. You’re fucking cool. Don’t let anybody change you.” I was in high school, and, in retrospect, this was a ridiculous thing to say to a teen. However, this memory stuck with me nonetheless. I did not take this advice, and I became an entire different person in the next five years.
