I’d love to meet Hannah Arendt for a turkey dinner. I would talk to her about politics, freedom, and how society has changed. She covered the 1961 trial of a Nazi, Adolf Eichmann, and she theorized the most dangerous evils are committed by thoughtless “cogs” in systems. These “cogs” neglect their capacity to judge right from wrong, which is what enables them to do horrible things.
A modern day example of this in America is ICE agents detaining suspected illegal immigrants, some of whom are U.S. citizens. Arendt would argue that ICE agents are thoughtless cogs in a system. This tracks, as ICE is hiring basically anyone to ameliorate their agenda. I know this because I personally have no relevant qualifications, and I am having ICE advertise to me to join their team.
