Jay Gatsby’s lavish parties cannot hide the hollow core of this over-analyzed novel. The characters are universally unlikable, shallow, and driven entirely by superficial desires. Nick Carraway acts as a passive, unreliable narrator whose obsession with Gatsby grows tiresome. The prose relies heavily on heavy-handed symbolism, like the green light and the eyes of T.J. Eckleburg. Reading it feels less like uncovering a profound critique of the American Dream and more like watching wealthy people whine about their self-inflicted problems.
