What’s a classic book that you think is overrated?

Melville’s maritime epic could easily be cut in half without losing any of its actual narrative value. The compelling story of Captain Ahab’s obsessive quest for vengeance is constantly derailed by dry, textbook-style chapters on whale anatomy and 19th-century whaling economics. These encyclopedic interruptions completely kill the pacing and tension built up on the Pequod. While the allegorical elements are rich, the sheer volume of filler makes reading it an absolute chore. It functions better as a historical artifact than an engaging piece of fiction.
