My favorite thing about myself is my adaptability. I am able to adapt to new circumstances well. I adapted to new circumstances. I was able to adapt well to my recovery from a brain injury. I was in a debilitated state after I rolled a 2-door car at over 100 mph in 2011.
After I was comatose for 7-weeks, doctors gave me ritalin. First, my right arm started moving. Then, very slowly, the rest of my body stated to become conscious.
I opened my eyes and saw dark green mesh surrounding me, encapsulating me on a bed. I knew something was wrong right away. I used every ounce of willpower I had to sit up. Horrified at what I was experiencing, I screamed at the staff around me, “Kill me, I’m retarded!” These words came out of my mouth in a series of unintelligible squeaks.
When I said, “Kill me!” I meant it, too. I would prefer to be dead than be in that state forever. So, I fought with every ounce of willpower that I had to “escape” from that dark place. I put in more effort than I even knew I had within me to regrow my brain.
I adapted to my injury recovery well. Everyone in the hospital saw me exhibit incredible willpower during my recovery. For this, they awarded me with a real Iron Man medal upon my discharge.
