What are your thoughts on the concept of living a very long life?
America has not even legalized assisted suicide, not even for the elderly or people who are so disabled that they can no longer function. This, I believe, is wrong. So, I think that people should be supported in maintaining their life, but that if an elderly or severely disabled competent person wants to intentionally end their life, they should be allowed to do so.
When I was a young child, I had a negative attitude towards the concept of living a very long life. I thought, why do we keep people alive for so long? As I grew older, I began to recognize the inherent value in human life, and so my thinking on it changed. However, even for the elderly, suicide remains not only unsupported by hospitals, but it is actually illegal.
Now, I believe human life is indefinitely more valuable than I had previously recognized. I think we should provide all elderly people with sufficient support. In some respects, we do. Most if not all developed nations do indeed have social security, which financially supports people who have become too old to work. But, I also believe that if a competent elderly or severely disabled person wants to end their life, they should be allowed to do so.
