Make an appointment with a neurologist, a sleep therapist, a nurse practitioner, and/or anyone else you can think of who would be able to prescribe medication. The day of the appointment, shower, put on some nice clothes, and arrive five minutes early to the appointment. When you see the doctor, be respectful and courteous. Ask them about how they are doing, and express interest in their answer.
Answer their questions and tell them about your life at the moment – highlight your daily struggles! This is important. Then, say, “I was wondering if you could give me something to help me think more clearly.” Then, pause to see what they say.
My brain injury was when I was 16. Then, in my later teens, I sought something to counteract the negative mental effects of the injury. Given the severity of my injury, I knew anything effective would have to be a controlled substance.
Because of my age, first doctor I asked, Dr. Glassman, accused me of faking it just to get ahead in college. I fled the clinic.
I went to several different doctors before a neurologist finally prescribed me 5mg of Ritalin. That was the beginning of my life after the injury.
