My favorite thing about myself is that I try to view all people, even bad ones, as having equal worth. This fact took me a long time to grapple with, especially when I considered violent criminals. But, it is true that every single person should be respected in an equal way.
I was visiting my sibling in a large city in our state once. We were walking on the sidewalk, and turned a corner and saw a decrepit homeless man. There are a lot of homeless people in the city of Madison, so this should not have surprised me. Maybe it was because I was with my sister. Maybe I was in an especially empathetic mood. I started sobbing right there in the middle of the sidewalk.
