The oldest thing that I still use daily is my brain. My brain is 30 years old, making it one of the oldest things I own. It has been through plenty of trauma. I rolled a car going probably over 100 miles per hour, and just barely survived. After the accident, I was comatose for seven weeks. I was recovering in the hospital for over three and a half months.
Despite this life-altering trauma, I was eventually able to rejoin my friends in at school. I was able to recover well from the injury. Claire visited me in the hospital every day, which helped my recovery in a big way. Over ten years passed before we could talk about this time.
“I was like, come on, I want my friend back!” she said to me, laughing, when we were talking about it the other day. I laughed so hard. This was literally what saved me from being dependent on others for the rest of my life. Her response to my trauma is humor, and so we laughed together, hard.
