This is my friend Jennifer. We went to the same school from 8th grade through high school. She was kind of my friend, but I hadn’t spoken to her in over ten years. I saw her recently at 5-day Claire’s wedding celebration in Punta Cana.
We sat side by side on the beach, drinks in hand. We talked about random things; it was fun.
The next day, I saw her sitting with a group of our friends. I left my boyfriend in a beach chair with a beer and walked over to them. Welcomed into the group, I sat down next to Jennifer. We started talking.
She mentioned the name a guy we had both gone to eighth grade with at a small Catholic school. I was drunk, and I blurted out, “He fingered me in high school.”
“Me too!” said Jennifer. I laughed harder than I had ever laughed in my entire adult life.
In eighth grade, I had always sensed some sort of unspoken animosity between Jennifer and I. However, I had never confirmed it. When she said these words, I realized I had been jealous of her. I had misinterpreted her fearless confidence when she spoke to this guy for animosity towards me.
To me, this is very funny. Never assume what other people are thinking.
