I’ve worked as a cashier at Kohl’s, Jets station, and TJX. I also worked as a Reader for Social Security for two years. At Social Security, I worked in an office and read documents aloud for a blind employee. I also made copies. I prepared mail to be sent out. I even learned how to do one or more managerial tasks. These included assigning workloads and completing new Social Security card applications. I also completed Voluntary Tax Withholding forms.
Being trusted to finish managerial tasks at Social Security made me feel competent. This was huge for me because I had felt decidedly incompetent since my injury at 16. This job helped me to restore faith in myself, and be more confident in my decision making in the future.
Have you ever had a job where you worked in an office? What was your role? What tasks did you finish?
