I would like to talk to some of the stray cats who live in the woods behind the house. The small orange cat pictured here will let us come within ten feet of her* before she runs away.
There are four other cats not pictured here. One is a calico cat. Another is a dark gray cat I call Gracie. There is also a small black cat that comes around sometimes. A light gray cat is the mother of three or four of them. She is not too friendly, and is very scared of us. My partner and I think she was probably abused.
I love them all – they give me a good reason to get up early. The first thing I do every day is fill the bowl with food. I leave a bowl of fresh water out for them every day too. Sometimes, around midday, their bowl is already empty, and I feed them again. Those cats are hungry!
*My partner and I don’t know the sexes of the cats except for the mother. He uses the pronouns “he” and “him” for all of them. So, I use the pronouns “she” and “her” to refer to for all the cats.
