I spent all morning at the nursing home, keeping a loved one company. I come to the nursing home twice a week, and I stay at least all morning every time. It’s emotionally taxing to watch this loved one smoke and cry and fumble with her meals. Yet, we all try to pitch in where we’re needed. The nursing home is where I am needed at this time.
This makes me feel helpful, which makes me feel good. I strive to be a helpful person in all aspects of my life. But, sometimes, other patients at the nursing home confuse me ask me to do things for them. I’ve had to tell other patients at the nursing home “I do not work here.”
I’ve also had to say, “Please do not comment on my appearance” to several patients in the nursing home. It is exhausting, but I am here because it is where I am needed at this time.
