Practice makes perfect. Well, not exactly, but one thing is true. If one spends time practicing anything, one will get better at it.
I have a poor memory. I know this about myself, so I schedule time to practice memorizing things by playing a game on my phone. By practicing, my brain builds pathways between neurons called synapses. These pathways either improve upon or diminish certain behaviors. So, in this way, I am growing towards a better memory.
I notice my memory improving too. Changes are slight, so slight I wouldn’t notice them if I was not paying attention. But then, I started paying attention. Now, I notice myself remembering about something I could not remember as recently as one year ago.
I congratulate myself every time I notice myself remembering something that I would not have remembered before. This maintains my positive attitude towards growth, and motivates me to keep practicing.
Keep practicing, because changes in one’s brain can be powerful. This can be observed by getting better at something one had struggled with in the past. One may not notice this if they do not pay close attention. To live the type of life that is desired, one can change one’s own behavior. Change in the brain is possible by consistently building synapses between neurons.
In the end, growth is not about perfection—it is about progress. By practicing, even in small ways, we shape our minds and our habits. Memory, like any skill, can be improved with intention and effort. So, know that every repetition counts.
