What sort of thing is consciousness?

What alternative career paths have you considered or are interested in?

I am interested in astronomy and philosophy, though those are not really career paths. Still, they interest me in a great way. They interest me because new discoveries are still being made in astronomy and philosophy, especially philosophy of mind.

For example, philosophers have been struggling to account for consciousness for at least the last half century. What is consciousness? Given the accepted view among most philosophers, materialism, consciousness seems impossible to account for. We know that consciousness exists, but what sort of thing is it?

What do you think consciousness is? Do you, like myself, think it’s a combination of all your senses being understood together? Or, do you have a different theory? Let me know in the comments!
