The quality of a person’s job can lead to a reduction in well-being and mental health. Good work balances the interests of the individuals, employers, and society. It does this so that people can remain productive in a sustainable way over time. Performance, engagement, and fairness are important indicators of this. Poor quality jobs can lead to reduction in wellbeing and mental health. Being unemployed is worse for mental health and wellbeing than being employed.

The system can enable people with disabilities to work. In most countries in the world, people with a mental health disability are far less likely to work than fully-able people. This is in comparison to people with a physical health disability. Reasons for these low rates include low levels of education, lower socio-economical standing, and psycho social factors. Also, people with mental ill health are discriminated against in the workplace. We are now seeing an increase in short-term contracts among the disabled who are employed.
