I do not condone murder. Yet, Luigi Mangione’s actions seem to have provoked a worldwide class lucidity. The lower class has been reminded of the stark exploitation that occurs to keep them there. Change is necessary; Mangione recognized this, and decided to become a vigilante.
Brian Thomson, who was the CEO of United Healthcare, “received a total compensation package last year of $10.2 million” in 2023, while his company denied 1 in 5 claims that same year (Dionnne and Kircher, NYT 2024)1. There is no legal recourse for this action. Mangione, a Penn state graduate, decided this was unacceptable, and decided to take action.
