Breathe in for four seconds, then breathe out for four seconds. Repeat until the distressing emotion lessens.
Recognize your emotions. One way of recognizing your emotions and tolerating them is to imagine your emotions as helium balloons. You can hold them and perceive their existence, but practice letting go of the balloons and letting them float away. The same goes for emotions. At first, they are very real and may affect one deeply. However, over time, emotions lessen, like helium balloons disappearing into the sky.
Mental health is, for many people, the most important aspect of health. Emotional regulation can make or break a person’s life by determining one’s response to strong emotional reactions.
