Dr. Paruchuri is my favorite doctor. She’s not much older than me, and she immigrated to the U.S. from India, as a young person, I assume, because her English is perfect. I have been seeing her for many years.

The last time I saw her, I told her I liked her thin golden bracelets, of which she had three. She said, “Do you want one?”

Flabbergasted, I stammered, “Wow, are you sure?”

“Yes,” she said, and wriggled one bracelet off her tiny wrist and handed it to me. Awestruck, I wriggled it onto my own wrist.

That was the end of our interaction regarding the bracelet, but this seemingly random act of altruism made a big impression on me. It let me know how big of an impact my regular nature makes on people. I strive to be a decent person, and this bracelet coming into my possession actually increased my understanding of my own self-worth.
