Why do some women change their name when they get married?

Giving up your identity for someone seems wild to me. Especially since you have to go through all this work to change your name? I just don’t get it. Like, you know? You have to gather up your original “proof documents” and then mail them to or visit your local social security office. Social security cannot accept photocopies of these documents. It’s such a hassle to legally give up your identity. I just don’t get it. Can somebody please explain their perspective to me in the comments? Thanks.
