Yesterday was international women’s day, yet, in 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the freedom to have an abortion was no longer a federally protected right in the United States of America. Therefore, American women in several states ranging from the deep south to the Midwest actually have fewer rights than they had before 2022. This ruling was decided by three republican Supreme Court justices all appointed by a man currently facing 32 counts of willful retention of national defense information, and ten other counts of crimes including “conspiracy” and “corruptly concealing” (source).
The revoking of a formally federally protected right by members appointed by a criminal seems like it should be illegal, but it actually occurred entirely legally. Many women and men unknowingly voted away the freedom and right of all American women to legally get an abortion in 2016, back when Donald Trump was first “elected,” (when his opponent actually won the popular vote by 2.8 million votes).
This is why it is so important to spread truth today. The 2016 election, which was responsible for appointing Trump, was largely decided by female voters – over 40% of them voted for Trump. Widespread misinformation was largely responsible for this massive turnout of women voting against their own rights; therefore, truth is vital in upholding democracy.
