By continuing with tradition and changing their last name when they get married, women in America today are setting a president to submit to the patriarchy. In an age when our abortion access is restricted, women can no longer afford to do this.

For women who’s mothers changed their last name when or if they got married, this is a seemingly radical notion. However, EXTRA work is actually gone through to legally change a last name, and so this tradition is hardwired into the minds of millions. What I am proposing is that women STOP going through the work of changing their last name upon marriage.

This will benefit women in many ways. First of all, it allows women to better retain a sense of personal identity. Secondly, it uproots the patriarchal ideas embedded in this American nation. Thirdly, it sets a precedent for younger generations, so they know their last name doesn’t need to belong to a man.
