So, the Hatch Act was passed in 1939 and it prevents federal employees from discussing politics at work and in other certain situations outside of work as well. Sometimes, while I was at work, I would overhear Sargent Wayne say things like, “…wanna let women choose…”, which, given my newly employed status and ignorance of the Hatch act at this time, I would often respond to with a counterexample or opposing viewpoint. This has continually caused me to have an emotional reaction, which affects my productivity, as well as my wellbeing, at work. I realize that I should not have continued to engage with him; however, this particular political topic reflects my values, and I believe he should be held accountable for continuing to engage in these conversations with me with a full understanding of the Hatch act.
