At 5:30 that morning on a beach, Kyle proposed to Mary Kate. She had already picked out the ring, so it wasn’t exactly a surprise, but that’s how proposals should be, you know? Later that day Mary Kate and Kyle came to my parents’ house to “share” the news (Mary Kate had already told us that they had reserved a venue.) I was the first to shake Kyle’s hand and say, “Welcome to the family.”
Then, I took my mom Kathleen out to a bar called The Local for a late Mother’s Day gift. We each has one beer and Kathleen had a meal, I had an appetizer. We were relaxed and un-rushed. It was delightful.
Later, I went to Mug Zs on my own. Laura shared her weed with Bill and I. I sat in between them as we finished a bowl. Bill took one huge hit and didn’t cough. I was impressed. Later in the night, as I was leaving, I stopped by where Bill was sitting at the bar, and I said goodbye and that I enjoyed seeing him. He said he enjoyed seeing me as well, and that he especially enjoyed smoking with me and Laura. I walked out to my Lyft happy.
Bill is 49. But he has a dry wit and a face not unlike that of an angel. I like it that we’re friends but he would never sleep with me. I like it too, and this is kind of sad for him, but he is always at Mug Zs, the local bar. Like, 9 out of ten times he’s already there when I walk in. Once, before I knew him very well, I walked into the bar one morning and saw him there. Needlessly, I blurted out, “Do you live here?”
